Reading this after being discharged from the hospital this morning for a heat stroke and exhaustion. Which happened 15mins into a workshop I was facilitating yesterday #TheStruggleIsReal #WhyAmIEvenOnSubstack 😩😅😮‍💨

Thanks for sharing Maya and for the reminder that our health is our only currency and we have to take care of ME!! Take good care!

I’ve rescheduled many medical appointments for meetings that would have went on with or without me.

literally alll the time.

I was reading, nodding along, thought to myself, "of course I would reschedule the. . . WAIT A MINUTE" the conditioning goes DEEP. It's both objectively insane to work past our bodies limit to make a chat room successful. At the same time, it's normalized in a way that bypasses our prefrontal cortex. Great piece about the madness of the ambition scam.

still recovering from the ambition scam myself

It’s a lifelong journey :)

that damn ambition.

We’re not rewarded for these sacrifices. When I worked in manufacturing, I fell into a hole. The men nearby that worked for me pulled me up. It could’ve been much worse with me falling more than 10ft onto pure concrete. If it had happened just a few days prior I would have fallen on to a scrap conveyor belt that we had just shortened. That conveyor collects scrap sheet metal that gets smashed into 2-ton bales. I went to the plant hospital where the doctor let me know how the executive staff frowns on members of management getting injured. The protocol is to report all safety incidents. I had to do my own report. Only one person from that staff inquired about my well-being. That’s only because we were walking past each other a few days later. Not a peep from the remaining 8 or so. That plus me overhearing conversations about folks allowing themselves to get worn down. They always said, "why didn’t they take care of themselves?" They don’t see it as dedication at all.

YOU have so many stories.

this is insane

As an entrepreneur, I resonate with this sooooo deeply. It can take years for that work/corporate mentality to wear off. I still have to remind myself that all my deadlines are [mostly] made up lol. A great biz coach I had once said that the point of going out on your own was not to "build another cage"

maya watson's avatar

“don’t build another cage.” ooof. so good.

The intern on the day job has started graduate school. I'm sending this to her. Look I got a long way to go with relearning too, because the way Chelsea's statement would have set me back!! Oh that is the magic elixir "You're the only one who can do it." OMG!!! But LOL, I saw what y'all did--I clicked on the video link and saw you hosted the meeting on like 5% battery power?!?! The signs were there just like the signs were there for all of us in similar situations. LOL and you had the sunshades on in your profile pic! It can't be said enough thank y'all for being a voice!

Kevin Stuckey's avatar

I appreciate how you clock the details. phone at 5% is it’s own companion piece lol

maya watson's avatar

we need to meet the intern at this point. the ecstasy of being so needed! i was hanging on by a thread and moderated the room for an hour. how insane.
